Small businesses 'should install Google Analytics'

The top web design tip for small businesses is to install Google Analytics on their site, according to an expert.

Carrie Hill of Search Engine Watch, said it could be the most crucial piece of software for a small firm trying to improve its search engine optimisation (SEO).

Ms Hill also noted that an eye-catching header or logo could be important, because they make an instant impression on visitors.

She warned companies not to ignore basic layout considerations, such as the ratio of text to graphics, stating that graphics-heavy sites may not perform well in search engines, as it is hard to establish their relevance.

Her recommendation was to allow space for at least 250 words on each page and to ensure that a readable and well-sized font is used.

In related news, Steve Davis of GSI Commerce Europe recently advised ecommerce sites to restyle their websites during the festive season.
