SME's 'increasingly opting for UK domain names'

24/11/2008

A recent report has revealed that small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) are choosing .uk domain names for their primary web addresses - news that may be of interest to web design experts.

According to Nominet's study, registration to .uk domains has increased by 12 per cent, over the last 12 months.

This means that 81 per cent of SMEs now have a .uk domain name as their primary address.

Phil Kingsland, director of marketing and communications at Nominet, said: "[SMEs] are opting for a country code over a generic top level domain because it demonstrates a business is local and trusted."

The findings may encourage ecommerce and online retail sites that have yet to acquire a .uk domain name to purchase one.

Tom Royal at Computer Active said that companies which are serious about attracting traffic should acquire a suitable domain name and research which registrar they opt for.

He noted that it has never been easier to create a website but that a complex name may be difficult to remember for customers and clients.
