Ecommerce 'viewed as the main use of the internet'

The majority of consumers view the internet primarily as a shopping tool, experts have claimed.

According to Nachi Lolla, research director, commerce at Nielsen Online, the challenge faced by retailers is not luring shoppers but is distinguishing a brand from the others.

Nielsen Online's @Plan Winter 2008/2009 showed that almost 80 per cent of adults in the US have purchased something on the internet in the last year.

Ms Lolla said: "Most consumers see online retail as a primary benefit of the internet.

"The sheer convenience of being able to comparison shop from your home or office has become all but irresistible," she added.

Price, selection and customer service were ways in which ecommerce firms can distinguish themselves during the holiday season, Ms Lolla said.

According to the American Chronicle, ecommerce is the "secret recession killer" and is continuing to thrive during the financial crisis.

With the high cost of fuel and annoying sales people, shopping online is becoming increasingly attractive, the news provider claimed.
