Google and Yahoo deal falls through

06/11/2008

Google has announced that its planned advertising deal with fellow search engine Yahoo has collapsed.

David Drummond, senior vice president of Google, wrote in a blog that government regulators and some advertisers had reservations about the agreement.

In news that may be of interest to those in search marketing, Mr Drummond said the deal would have provided better and more comprehensive advertising opportunities for publishers and other users.

However, he suggested that pressing ahead with the move would have risked a long legal battle and could have damaged the firm's relationship with its partners.

"We're of course disappointed that this deal won't be moving ahead. But we're not going to let the prospect of a lengthy legal battle distract us from our core mission," he added.

In related news, 4hoteliers.com recently said that the search engine index is the "cornerstone" of any search engine optimisation analysis.

It added that it is crucial for firms to establish whether or not their site is showing up in the Google rankings as it is the largest search engine on the web.
