American internet users conducted almost 7.3 billion searches on Google last month, new figures from comScore have shown.

This was up 0.4 per cent on the previous month and represented 61.9 per cent of the 11.8 billion queries conducted across all of the core search engines in July, the statistics indicated.

Search optimisation executives may also be interested to read that Yahoo!'s share of the market shrank slightly in July, falling to 20.5 per cent.

Microsoft saw its share drop to 8.9 per cent, while Ask and AOL both recorded increases in the number of searches conducted via their engines.

Commenting on a recent Nielsen Online report that also highlighted Google's dominance of the US search market, Don Reisinger of CNET News.com said that the search engine's success may be due to its philosophy of ensuring that web users spend as little time as possible on its site.ADNFCR-1679-ID-18744944-ADNFCR
