Search optimisation professionals may like to note new statistics suggesting that Google is now the most visited website on the mobile internet.

According to software company Opera, Google leapfrogged Yahoo! to become the most popular web destination for those accessing the internet from their mobile devices last month.

BBC.co.uk fell a place to finish fourth, with Facebook moving up to third place. Other sites in the top ten included Wikipedia, Bebo, YouTube, Myspace and new entry MSN.com.

Commenting on the growing popularity of the mobile internet, Opera chief executive Jon von Tetzchner said: "Mobile web access allows many people to explore beyond the boundaries of their world, uncover new cultures and ideas, and let them add their voices to the conversation."

Google recently developed an application for use with the new iPhone 3G, allowing users to quickly access the search engine from their handsets.ADNFCR-1679-ID-18699176-ADNFCR
