The increasing popularity of online media such as images and videos means that marketers should look at search engine optimisation (SEO) that goes beyond text, according to one expert.

Chrysi Philalithes of Search Insider noted that 15 per cent of Google's searches are carried out via its image function, highlighting web users' growing demand for photos and other pictures.

Companies could take advantage of this trend to carry out image-based marketing, she went on to explain, with SEO being one important component of such a strategy.

Ms Philalithes remarked: "Search engines can't 'read' still images and understand what they are about, so you need to ensure that you are tagging and optimising your images and your video assets appropriately."

In a recent interview with Beet.tv, Google's R J Pittman revealed that the company is working on image processing and search that is capable of examining specific pixels of images.ADNFCR-1679-ID-18697002-ADNFCR
