Websites owned by Google were the most popular online destinations for US web users last month, according to a new study that may be of interest to the search optimisation sector.
Conducted by comScore, the research showed that Google sites saw 140.16 million unique visitors last month, with Yahoo! just behind with 140.08 million visitors.
Leisure-related sites were found to be the most attractive category of websites for US internet users, possibly as a result of the end of the school year in June.
"When [Americans] are online, they spend more time engaged in leisure-related activities, whether it's playing games online, checking out reviews for this year's summer blockbusters or gearing up for their summer travel," said Jack Flanagan, executive vice-president of comScore Media Metrix.
The research also found that AOL's Platform-A had the biggest advertising reach last month, followed by the Yahoo! and Google networks.
Meanwhile, comScore recently revealed that Google was the most popular search engine in the US last month, dominating the market despite seeing a slight drop in its share of overall searches.
