Firms urged to utilise custom search engine services

Installing custom search facilities from the likes of Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft could greatly improve the user experience on corporate and e-commerce websites, it has been claimed.
Erik Arnold of Adhere Solutions said in an Information Today article published by redorbit.com that the rising popularity of these search engines means that it may be beneficial to make use of their custom services to ease the website search process.
He noted that studies have indicated 50 per cent of all web users tend to go straight to a site's search facility when surfing the internet, a trend that may have an impact on companies' search optimisation procedures.
Mr Arnold remarked: "I know that I am not alone in leveraging Google, Yahoo! or Microsoft to find content on a specific website because the site search yielded poor results, yet so few use the full capabilities of these services to deliver their own site search."
Google Site Search, an update of the Custom Search Business Edition service, was launched earlier this year.
The solution features improved indexing and makes use of cloud computing.
