Web giants seize iPhone app opportunities

11/07/2008

Popular internet companies such as Google, AOL and Facebook have released a range of applications for the iPhone.

Apple has launched a new App Store for users of the device to coincide with the release of the 3G version of the iPhone today (July 11th).

Google has created a search application that makes it easier for users of the iPhone and the iPod Touch to conduct internet searches - something that may be of interest to search optimisation executives - while AOL has launched free versions of its AIM instant messaging service, video search engine Truveo and AOL Radio.

Facebook, meanwhile, has made available a Facebook for iPhone application that complements its existing iPhone-specific site by making use of more relevant technology to improve browsing experiences for mobile users.

Over 500 applications can be downloaded from the App Store upon launch in total, with other programs coming from the likes of MySpace, Sega, eBay, the Associated Press and Travelocity, among others.

Philip Schiller of Apple commented: "iPhone represents a new software platform for developers, combining the most advanced mobile operating system, sophisticated developer tools and a breakthrough way for developers to wirelessly sell and distribute their applications right onto every iPhone."ADNFCR-1679-ID-18680470-ADNFCR
