Companies could soon be able to use their brands to create unique domain names if plans to shake up the system governing the use of top-level domains go ahead, those involved in e-commerce web design may be interested to read.
The proposals also include the potential launch of the .xxx domain name and allowing individuals to come up with their own domains.
A meeting of the internet's regulators will take place on June 26th to determine whether the plans will get the green light.
Dr Paul Twomey, chief executive of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, told BBC News that the plans have wide-ranging implications for the internet.
"The impact of this will be different in different parts of the world. But it will allow groups, communities and business to express their identities online," he commented.
VeriSign recently released research suggesting that there were more than 162 million domain name registrations across all of the top-level domain names across the globe in the first quarter of 2008.
