Guardian: search engine optimisation is the key

09/06/2008

The Guardian has suggested that the key to making your website stand out over more than 100 million others is through search engine optimisation (SEO).

Google uses more than 200 factors to determine the order of its results and although the exact factors are secret, it is generally thought that the criteria is split between on page factors such as text and content, and off page factors such as the number of external links to the site in question.

After making sure your site is indexed by search engines, a number of alterations and enhancements should be made to the site to help push it up the search rankings.

Key words, especially in headlines, are important and are one of the ways to improve search ranking.

Businesses can pay for sponsored links, but this can prove costly if you have a lot of users as the price is often based on a cost-per-click scheme.

Perhaps a better way of improving rankings would be to employ a SEO specialist to advise on how to improve.
Tactics are important in SEO and reliance on only one search engine is ill-advised.

Car insurance company GoCompare dropped from page one to page seven on Google overnight amid claims they were being penalised for "link buying", a shortcut that Google reportedly disapproves of.
