Ecommerce - Amazon tops etailer list

03/06/2008

Amazon has topped the Hitwise Hot Shops list of etailers again, continuing its reign as Britain's most visited online retailer.

Amazon has headed the list every quarter since it began in May 2006 and has fended off the likes of Tesco, Apple and Play.com.

The Hot Shops list is one of a number of lists released by Hitwise, another of which rates Amazon in the top 20 UK websites.

The site came 19th with a market share of 0.46 per cent, way behind Google in first place with 7.88 per cent.

One point of interest is that half of the online retailers in the Hot Shops top ten list now have physical stores compared to only three out of ten in May 2006.

CEO of IMRG James Roper told New Media Age that he expects to see a number of high street retailers branching out into online sales soon.

"With the internet dominating retail growth and more than £60 billion worth of online sales at stake this year, it's surprising that so many of the traditional high street retailers are still failing to appear on the Hot Shops List, because that's where the action is."

Tesco Direct, Game and Sainsbury's made the top 50 this time around, with Opodo and Tesco Electrical dropping off the list.
